RAKHIM
This South African born DJ has been plying his trade on the decks since the relatively tender age of 13. With a musician/singer father and ballroom dancing mother, Rakhim has always been surrounded by music. And not just your standard tunes. Growing up in colour divided South Africa, Rakhim’s access to music included the diverse sounds of India and the soaring vocals of African tribes.
Naturally enough, Rakhim’s taste in music developed from the original hip hop and rap roots into the house sets he plays today. Rakhim draws from his African heritage and includes sublime drum beats, deep bass and French and African voices. To experience Rakhim on the decks is to take a trip around not just the world, but musical history.
Rakhim has not long moved to Perth and prior to that he regularly headlined massive dance parties in Johannesburg where an audience in the thousands was the norm rather than the exception. He has also played Pascha in Ibiza and Radio Nova in Paris via live link up.
While his musical tastes are eclectic and exotic, this DJ’s skill truly does lie in his ability to mix. His mixes are clean, fluent and well timed. As Rakhim says, knowing your music makes your mixing better. And he certainly does know his music!
International artists such as Carl Cox, Little Louis Vegas, Jeff K, Eric Rugg, Bob Sinclair, DJ Yellow, DJ Pony and Laurent Garnier have all made sure Rakhim was on the bill when they toured South Africa. Now that Perth is hearing the sounds of Rakhim, we look forward to charting his Australian career.
